Internet Software Tools
Your use of the Internet may be enhanced by a number of commonly-used
helper applications and Internet tools.
Although Global Village makes these applications available to you, they are not GlobalCenter Web applications. If you have questions about a specific application, read the instructions and documentation that accompanies it, or contact the authors.
- Helper Applications
- Software that you use with GlobalCenter Web, for example to play sounds and movies.
- Stuffit Expander
- Software for uncompressing and decoding software you download. If you retrieve a file that includes .sit or .hqx or both in the file name, the file has been encoded and compressed. Stuffit restores the software to its original format.
- Internet Tools
- Software for accessing non-World Wide Web resources, such as live video, advanced file transfer, and so on.
Helper Applications
- Image Viewers
- To view and manipulate World Wide Web images, you use a graphic application such as JPEG View.
- Sound Players
- Some files you download include sound. To play these files, you need an application such as Sound Machine.
- Movie and Animation Viewers
- You can download movie clips and animations from the Internet. To view these movies after downloading them, you use an application such as Sparkle.
- NCSA Telnet
- To access library catalogs and other on-line databases that are not in hypertext format you use an application such as NCSA Telnet. Running NCSA Telnet in conjunction with GlobalCenter Web allows you to log in to other sites where you will use a text-based, command-line interface to access databases and other applications at those remote sites. NCSA Telnet
- Stuffit Expander
- Files on the Internet are usually compressed to reduce the file size and transfer time. You can use a program called Stuffit Expander to uncompress these files.

Internet Tools
- FTP
- File transfer protocol (ftp) is a common protocol for moving files across the
Internet. There are many ftp sites that allow the public to access files. Often ftp
sites are known as anonymous ftp sites, because the user name you enter when you log in
is the word anonymous. You can always use World Wide Web software to
access ftp sites (you are using World Wide Web software to read this page), but
you might want to try software designed for ftp sites, such as Fetch.
- USENET
- Although you can reach USENET newsgroups with GlobalCenter Web, to post articles on a newsgroup, you require a newsreader application such as Newswatcher.
- CU-seeme
- Anyone on the Internet can send live or recorded video to a
computer designated as a reflector site using software such as CU-seeme. Running
CU-seeme on your computer allows you to view incoming video and sound
from the reflector site. It works (slowly) even at speeds as low as
14,400bps. There are versions of CU-seeme for both 680x0 Macintosh computers and Power Macintosh computers. CU-seeme
- Gopher
- One way to browse Internet resources is with gopher, a menu-based service
that organizes files and directories by topic. There are thousands of
gopher servers across the world. You can always use World Wide Web software to
access gopher sites (you are using World Wide Web software to read this page), but
you might want to try software designed for gopher sites, such as TurboGopher.
- Anarchie
- A database service that searches anonymous ftp sites is Archie. Anarchie is a tool that allows you to easily access Archie and search for software and other files.
Anarchie.
- Libraries
- WAIS stands for wide area information search. Many libraries and
other educational and research institutions allow Internet users to access their sites and search their data banks using WAIS.
MacWais
- IRC
- Thousands, even tens of thousands of people, chat over the Internet
every day using the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) system. People from all over the world
log in to various chat channels devoted to any number of subjects. One common
way to access the IRC is IRCle.
IRCle
- HTTP Servers
- The software that turns a computer into a World Wide Web server is HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) server software. You can set up a Macintosh computer to function as a web server by installing MacHTTP. MacHTTP Server version 2.2 comes with extensive documentation, Apple scripts, and related material. Click here to download the application (this may take a few minutes).

- E-Mail
- If you don't already have an Internet e-mail program, one program that
allows you to easily send and receive e-mail and attached files is Eudora.
- Weather Maps
- A unique weather display system, dubbed Blue-Skies, has been created for the web. The system was created
by University of Michigan student Alan Steremberg under a National Science
Foundation grant.
Blue-Skies is designed to provide an extremely user-friendly
interface so that users with a minimal computer background can easily obtain
the information they need. The Blue-Skies program offers users relatively fast access to literally hundreds of real-time weather and environmental images.
